Business History
Architects Lara and Jeffrey Serbin founded Serbin Studio in 1998. In the first
three years, the husband-and-wife team provided outsourcing to established Arizona
architectural firms that needed extra manpower for construction documentation.
They gained a core group of clients, worked on a variety of building types, and
began to learn how to run a business. They also developed their own projects,
primarily residential remodels that allowed them to unleash their creative talents.
They paid their dues with these projects and learned invaluable lessons for the
future.
Business Growth
After three years of “ghosting” on other architects’ projects,
the Serbins decided to concentrate on their own identity and
dedicate the majority of their professional work to the
public sector. Capitalizing on more than 50 residential
remodel projects during Serbin Studio’s first five years,
public housing projects became their springboard into new success.
Serbin Studio’s first public project commission was the
City of Phoenix 2003 modernization of Foothills Village,
a 200-unit multifamily apartment complex constructed in the 1970s. With
completion of the renovation, Serbin Studio was awarded other
public projects for a variety of municipal clients. Among them
are Maricopa County Community College District, Maricopa County
and City of Scottsdale. Today most of Serbin Studio’s assignments
are with the City of Phoenix.
Staying Power
Operating an architectural firm requires attention to details
inside and outside the office. Serbin Studio’s staff members
attend public discussions and forums in order to understand community
issues and future opportunities. With shared goals always at
the forefront, the Serbins and their staff keep communication
channels open even if it’s only a snapshot of an idea.
That’s the secret to Serbin Studio’s continued growth
and staying power.
Environmental Commitment
Sustainable design offers a way to balance Serbin Studio’s
growth with maintaining and contributing to the well-being of
the planet. As part of a commitment to thinking “green,” Serbin
Studio attends the national Environdesign conference every year.
Making connections with policy makers, physicians, scientists,
explorers, and architects enhance awareness of current trends
in sustainable design. Jeffrey Serbin has been accredited with
LEED since 2004.
Personal Story
Jeffrey and Lara Serbin met at the College of Architecture at
the University of Arizona. From those early encounters, they
each knew they were going to be architects. Discovering that
they had the ability to work as a team, they respected and critiqued
each other’s class projects during their five years at
UA. That joint effort and hard work helped them get through the
tough times. After graduation, they got married in Phoenix and
created Serbin Studio around their “can do” philosophy,
synergy for ideas, and teamwork.
